//CORNELIA, but everyone just calls her CORRIE, is sitting on a chair, posing for a photograph. She just finished her nursery degree, so she is quite happy and not willing to hide it.
She is smiling to herself while curiously looking around the room from time to time, bouncing her leg to a rhythm in her head that she heard on the radio yesterday evening. Some movement in front of her is catching her attention and she looks up with a smile.//
//CORRIE
(surprised, but happy)//
Oh, hello there! I didn’t hear you coming in! Welcome to my house. Isn’t it cute? I am so proud of it! And it’s all mine! I am Cornelia, but everybody
calls me Corrie. What can I do for you?

This is my house and my house alone! Isn’t it nice? I am so glad my parents gave in, at the end, and allowed me to move out.
//(she gets a bit angry and annoyed)//
Not that they had any choice. But we had a horrible fight about it, I can tell you. "It’s not suitable for a young lady to live on her own", "you don’t have enough money", "you will be lonely", "what would the neighbours think?" I will tell you what the neighbors think! They are happy to have a nurse around that would get up and care for them no matter day- or night time!
//(she calms down and becomes happier again)//
And I would never be lonely, I have Dean and Brando here that keep me company.

I am nurse. But not just a simple nurse. I have a degree. I went to school for many years and now I know everything there is to know about being a nurse. Therefore, I also know everything that needs to be known about hygiene. But not everybody believes that.
//(She gets very annoyed)//
Oh, you don’t believe all the belittling words! And don’t even get me started on the white yellow cross!

Oh, the living conditions in those workers houses are not too bad, but it could be so much better. It’s all dirty and it will be even worse after the next rain. All the drains would float over and the mud would come in with the workers’ dirty shoes. Most of them only have one water tap still, with just a bucket underneath. The walls are all wet and there is no dedicated kitchen space. Perfect places to get sick. But some houses are in such
a bad condition that the mayor decided to demolish and rebuild an entire street not far from here. I drove past there a few times, and if you would ask me: It’s about time. It’s not that they don’t try to keep it clean,
but you can’t imagine how hard it is.

Goldfish! Goldfish are so amazing! I couldn’t ask for more. Never complaining, never eating too much, never too loud. They are not so much work compared to other pets and don’t need that much attention, but they still offer company. I named them after my favorite movie stars! Anyway, have you seen anything around here you want to know more about?

They were just some untainted people from the church who kept an eye on this neighborhood voluntary. But now, the government decided that nurses
need degrees. And when I look at their work - it was time! They wrote down basically nothing about the patient! How should I know if the treatment is actually good for them if I don’t know their history? The old nurses just told me "yeah do this and then it’s fine" No! It’s not! I need to know the details! The patient could be killed if you don’t pay attention! And they make this even harder. They just leave me with everything, say good luck, and are done with it. At least, they should have given me some time to get used to their way of work and show me around. This situation is as unpleasant for me as it is for them. I like swimming, but I don’t like being thrown into cold water like this.

Petronella, my neighbor, told me that she gets up at 5 o’clock to clean and polish the house and do the laundry. The first break she takes is around 10. And when the weather is bad, she has to hang up all the laundry inside the house. There is no way through the rooms. It is just packed! Almost impossible to find the children if I need to check on them, ha ha. But in all seriousness, she is trying her best. Thank god I don’t have to do these kind of chores anymore. Technology really saves my time now.

Over here you can see my radio. I love just relaxing after a long day of work, listening to music and reading about my favorite painters. I made a trip to Paris with a friend once, and still remember all the beautiful
pictures in all the museums and the musicians on the street. It really was a once in a lifetime moment! It was a good choice to befriend Lucia in the nurse school. Her father works for a train company, so she can travel
for free. Really something to be jealous of.

But not all of them are that bad, that is true. There is this good woman, who helps the needing mothers getting clothes for their children and taught them how to cook nice meals with the little that those families have. She
showed me around a bit, and told me about the residents when I was still new. That helped me finding my way around in the beginning.

Oh, if you go over there, you will see the kitchen. You will notice it is not very big, but at least it is separate from the rest of the house! It has enough space for me and my vegetable soups. And do you see that big
machine? That is my washing machine! Yes, I have a washing machine! You couldn’t believe how much easier my life is with a washing machine. My cloths are all clean and hygienic. I don’t have to spend my non-existing
free time on these chores anymore. I think every woman should get one. I don’t understand why it takes so long for them to get one. What are they afraid of? Losing their hands?

No that answers all of my questions. Thank you for your time.

No problem. Have a nice day, stay healthy!
